Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard

Oak Bluffs combines a seasonal ferry harbor with a walkable town visit, distinctive cottages and places connected to Black history. Start by checking the harbor used by your ferry and the time of your return. Outside seasonal service to Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven is the island’s year-round ferry arrival point.

The Campground, carousel and waterfront make useful points for planning a walk, but opening arrangements vary. The exterior paths around the cottages are available throughout the year, while the museum has a season. Allow time to enjoy the town rather than assuming every indoor attraction will be open on your date.

An app-based audio tour starts at 2 Seaview Ave in Oak Bluffs. Bring a charged smartphone for the audio and app. The experience does not include a live guide or transport; arrange your own travel to the start.

Gingerbread Cottages

The Gingerbread Cottages grew out of the nineteenth-century religious camp meeting movement. Today the colorful private homes and their decorated porches make the Campground a distinctive place for a walk. The outdoor paths can be explored year-round, and daytime photography is welcome from the paths and streets.

Remember that the cottages are homes. Stay out of private gardens and off porches, and leave residents room to use their property. The Cottage Museum is seasonal, from Memorial Day weekend to mid-October. Check its opening arrangements for the particular day before planning an indoor stop.

If arriving by car, read the local parking signs. Overnight parking on the Campground requires permission, and Trinity Park Circle has special overnight restrictions during July and August. A convenient walking route does not automatically include a parking place.

Flying Horses Carousel

The Flying Horses Carousel is at 15 Lake Avenue. Its horses are fixed to the rotating platform. The carousel adds another historic point to a town walk, but its operating calendar is seasonal. Check current opening information and the ride price before making it the centerpiece of your plan.

Public street parking is available in the area, subject to local rules. Space and access can vary, so read signs rather than assuming a reserved or free place. A visit to the carousel can be paired with a walk through the Campground when both fit your schedule.

Inkwell and Black history

Oak Bluffs is an important place in African American history, and Inkwell has long been a gathering place for Black families and visitors. Treat the waterfront as part of a living community as well as a place with historical meaning. Inkwell is not a beach reserved exclusively for one population group.

The history guide gives more context for the Wampanoag community, Edgartown and the Camp Meeting. Consider how these distinct stories connect across the island without reducing them to a single landmark or a single period.

Harbor, buses and your return

Oak Bluffs is served by seasonal ferries. Check your sailing’s terminal and date; the year-round Woods Hole route goes to Vineyard Haven. Island buses serve the towns, but their schedules change with the season. Compare the bus and ferry times and leave a margin for the connection.

See the ferry guide for mainland routes and getting there for a broader transport overview. If using Oak Bluffs as a base, our accommodation guide compares it with Vineyard Haven, Edgartown and rural locations.
